Thanks to a recent partnership with The Home Depot, we were recently allowed the opportunity to test out a new app that will bring together everything that contractors need to complete their tasks on time and on budget.  Called the Home Depot Pro App (iPhone and Android supported), this is a new mobile app built with a wide variety of useful and customizable features that were designed with the user in mind.

We understand your needs and wants as construction marketing professionals, and this is why we would like to share this user-friendly and intuitive app to improve job site efficiency and cost control.  According to a recent survey, the following facts came into play in Home Depot’s development of this app.

  • 93% of general contractors and 87% of subcontractors use some sort of mobile device at jobsites.
  • 58.9% of construction professionals said mobility is important when considering IT solutions.

The Home Depot’s Pro App is one of the only solutions-oriented apps specifically designed to meet the needs of professional builders.  Designed around the needs of professional builders, the app makes it easy to take everything you need on the go, from receipts to in-store product availability.

Home Depot Pro: Official Review

Device: LG Optimus G

Download Review: A well computed and configured app, the space taken up is minimal.  A relatively quick and easy download using 4G LTE, the app is unobtrusive and data use friendly.  The Pro App is available for free and can be downloaded on iOS and Android systems or by texting “PRO” to HDepot (433768).

Permissions Required: Location, Network Communication (View WiFi and Network Connections), Bluetooth, Storage, Phone Calls, Hardware (Audio Recording, Flashlight, Camera (Picture and Video)), Account Access, Test Access to Protected Storage

First Launch: As the App was launched for the first time, I was walked through the processes and procedures that the app allows, selecting stores that I would normally use as a contractor.  The app allows for the selection of your favorite stores and your favorite store.

Furthermore, the Home Depot Pro App will walk you through each screen, providing explanations of each option provided to the user.

Home Screen: Designed for ease of use, the PRO offers advanced options in a lightweight app built around the needs and wants of professionals.  Broken into the following 8 sections, the app offers an easily tailored user experience.

Product Search: Find products by Voice, Text, or Barcode

Stores: Taking into consideration your ‘favorite stores’ choices; the user is also provided the option to search based on current location via GPS, and using the following search terms: (City, State), (Zip Code), and (Store Number).  My favorite feature of this section is the ability to access store layouts within the app, allowing my team to plan their trip through the store and get back on the job. If you’re in a hurry, The Home Depot Pro App can let you check the inventory of your closest The Home Depot store, check Material Safety Data sheets and even make purchases right from the jobsite.
Lists: The lists feature allows you to organize jobs within the app, and organize said list to fit each job that you do have.  Once you have created your list (by whatever name you see fit), you are allowed the ‘go shopping’ feature, which allows you to organize your shopping list and search using the aforementioned search tools.
Tools: A great feature to allow for safe measurements, the Tools section features calculators and measurement converters for jobs.  The current calculators are as follows.

  • Drywall Calculator: The calculator takes into consideration everything you will need: Lengths, Heights, Drywall Panel Size, Amount of Walls, and Ceiling Measurements; providing an accurate representation of the amount of panels, screws, nails, and tape needed to coordinate a project.
  • Carpet Calculator: Simply calculated, the app takes into consideration the length and width of the room and offers the square footage based on whether you are using 12’ or 15’ carpet.
  • Insulation Calculator: Taking everything contractors and pros need into consideration, the app will calculate your insulation need based on the dimensions, heat source, and even the climate zone so you don’t have to.
  • Paint Calculator: Taking into consideration dimensions and trim needs, the paint calculator will bring up your paint needs.
  • Conversions: Area, Mass, Temperature, Length, and Volume
  • Suggested Apps: An intuitive feature based on your current purchases, Home Depot will recommend additional apps to help make your job as a professional easier.  The first recommended app is provided by EagleView 3D aerial technology, allowing you to gain a bird’s eye view for job site measurements anywhere, anytime.

Pro Xtra Account: The app also allows you to access Pro Xtra, The Home Depot’s loyalty program for Pros, from anywhere, linking you to personalized information at the touch of a button.

Purchase History:  Allowing you to save paper and time, the Home Depot Pro App allows both storage of online and in store receipts (With Pro Xtra), as well as customer service agreements.

Help: In case you missed any of the features pointed via the screen tips, or if you would like additional information or support, the Pro App offers additional assistance to users through the help section.

Weather Conditions: The Weather Conditions function allows your team to view real time weather, including an hour by hour and 5 day forecast.  If you’re heading to a new site, The Pro App can bring up local weather conditions in real time, so you can be prepared for anything.

All in all, The Home Depot’s Pro offerings provide advanced technology in a system of easy-to-use, efficient tools for professional builders and contractors.  The only possible improvement that we could see is the ability to add team members and send lists throughout the team.
